it was hard to find your place when you didn't fit in to begin with. while eek embodied all that was macabre and eerie about the desert and skeletos' history, it alienated her from others. after all, ghost stories and moon-drenched wastelands weren't all that skeletos was about, or even a major part of it. it was a functioning community, and she wasn't exactly a functioning youth. but this hardly bothered her, at least at this point in her life. she was too young to be concerned about lacking friends or being avoided by adults, and she was certainly too alienated to notice that her tendencies were creeping more and more toward the corner of (very) socially unacceptable.
at times, she was just another pup. the lizards that stretched out to sunbathe on sandstone slabs were toys, and the river was a place to swim and splash and race with others. but there were other moments, when a thrill crawled down inside her, tickling her stomach and rushing her heart. there were times when she just couldn't be contained.
it often happened at night. the disappearance of the sun was her favorite thing. she would often find a quiet and secluded place to watch the magic unfold as day shifted to dusk, and at last darkness took over. there was a thrum to the desert at night, a moonlit filter that cast everything in a thrilling new light. how she spent this precious time varied. at this moment, however, she felt the call of mischief.
she had forcibly commandeered a den, having killed the inhabitants earlier in the day. smaller animals could make the greatest toys, cracking bones and ripping skin wonderful noises. it had been her fun for the sunlight, but now the takeover would provide her with new entertainment. she nestled her still-puppish body within the cavern, and collapsed it upon herself, leaving only the white tip of her snout uncovered. she shifted, slightly, testing the give of the sand, ensuring that she would be able to spring from the disguise with ease and instantaneous speed. when all was set, eek settled and prepared herself for a long wait. with luck, a pack member or other intelligible beast would stride by; easy prey to a fun scare.
